Weight & Nutrition Management
Nutritional Counseling
There is an overabundance of information out there regarding diet and exercise, and most of it is wrong! How is anyone supposed to know what to eat or how to exercise with a new diet plan, book, gym gadget etc. showing up daily. There are more diet books and “systems” than ever before and Gym memberships are a record high and we just keep getting fatter and fatter. If you feel you need assistance with filtering through the good information and the bad, I can help you.
Thyroid
Checking Thyroid Hormone level is critical to Weight Loss. If the Thyroid is production adequate amount of T4 or T4 is not converting to T3 (the most metabolically active of the two) then no amount of dieting or exercise will lead to weight loss. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones T3 and T4 through stimulation by TSH from the Anterior Pituitary. These hormones are you energy source and deficiencies can lead to weight gain, fatigue, depression, hair loss, dry skin constipation…..
Most mainstream medical practitioners will check your TSH but rarely anything else and will only treat you if you are severely deficient. If you are lucky enough to find a practitioner that will treat your symptoms and not a number you will probably be prescribed Synthroid (which is pure T4). Remember T4 must convert to T3 to be metabolically active, if you are a poor converter which often happens when the body is under stress you will see very little if any improvement.
Micro Nutrient Testing
Our bodies need certain nutrient to function properly, if there is a deficiency then various enzymatic pathways in the body that are critical for proper functioning can be impaired and inhibit weight loss. For example chromium is a common nutrient deficiency and assists in insulin function and aids in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Micronutrient testing is able to assess for 33 specific nutrient deficiencies that play an important role in the development of chronic disease including obesity.
Food Sensitivity Testing
This is another test that aids a person’s health in multiple ways including weight loss. “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” is a concept stated by Lucretius many years ago. Many put valiant efforts forth to try and eat what we believe to be a healthy diet. However, often the healthiest of foods can trigger a reaction in our body causing our immune system to work against us. Finding out what you food sensitivities are as well determining intolerances to various molds, chemical, additives can help you in avoiding them and modifying your diet appropriately. This will not only help with your weight loss efforts, but will also help with digestive disorder, migraines, skin disorder, depression, and many more.
Supplements
We carry any array of pharmaceutical grade dairy free, gluten free supplement to address any nutrient deficiency you may have, provide support for diets of those busy individuals that do not have time to meal plan or cook, and also assist in speeding up you weight loss goals.
Weight Loss Support List
Improve Digestion: Poor breakdown of food leads to poor cell nutrition, which will lead to cravings and overeating. Adequate production (or supplementation) of Hydrochloric Acid and Digestive Enzymes will help.
Improve Metabolism: It is necessary for the body to make efficient use of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, particularly the burning of fat for fuel. Supplements that may help include L-Carnitine, vitamins B12 and B6 (injected is more effective), methionine, inositol and choline (amino acids the MIC in B12/B6 shot), taurine, liver and thyroid glandulars, vitamin A , dimethyl glycine (DMG), and gamma-linoleic acid (GLA).
Stimulate Energy Levels: This can be achieved with Vitamin C, pantothenic acid, adrenal glandular, potassium, magnesium, manganese, chromium, octo-cosanol, and the branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
Reduce Cravings: Sweets can be a huge problem for some. Using the amino acids glutamine and chromium and also avoid any allergenic foods.
Suppress Appetite: Phenylalanine and tryptophan are amino acids that have demonstrated effectiveness as well as the herb Hoodia.
It is important to make sure your hormones are in check, especially thyroid. If the thyroid production is low or even sub-clinical low, weight loss will be virtually impossible. Also, finding out what foods you are sensitive and counseling on proper food choices is very helpful. These services are now available at Scottsdale Skin and Holistic Health.
